Gilmore and Roberts Sunday 21st January The Old School House 5 pm

After the wonderful Edwina Hayes gig back in November, Barnsley Folk and Acoustic Night are pleased to announce that the next Old School House gig is Gilmore and Roberts on Sunday 21st January at 5pm.

Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts are a Barnsley based folk duo who combine award-winning songwriting with astounding musicianship and their trademark harmonies to create a powerful wall of sound. Nominated three times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Katriona Gilmore (fiddle, mandolin) and Jamie Roberts (guitar) met while studying at Leeds College of Music and released their debut album in 2008. Since then, the duo have toured Canada and mainland Europe, played some of the UK’s biggest acoustic festivals, toured with folk rock legends Fairport Convention and won countless accolades for their genre-spanning work.

In 2016, the duo marked a decade of performing together with their first live album, released ten years to the day since their first EP launch. Limited to one thousand hand-numbered copies and recorded on the duo’s 2016 spring tour, In Our History – LIVE is available exclusively at shows and from gilmoreroberts.co.uk/shop.

Katriona Gilmore grew up in Knebworth, Hertfordshire, learned violin at school and started playing local folk clubs with her guitarist father at the age of 14. She joined folk pop sensations Tiny Tin Lady in 2006, and in 2011 was invited to be part of a new lineup of The Albion Band. Katriona has featured on many acclaimed albums as a session musician and has appeared onstage with such diverse acts as The Troggs, Kim Richey and Matt Berry.
Jamie Roberts was brought up in Barnsle in a musical family – his sister Kathryn Roberts is a well-respected singer on the UK folk scene. Jamie joined young English traditionalists Kerfuffle in 2007 and more recently formed The Dovetail Trio with Rosie Hood and Matt Quinn. Alongside his regular projects, he has performed with Nancy Kerr’s Sweet Visitor Band and Blackbeard’s Tea Party amongst others.

Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band – The Old School House Venue 16th July, early doors

Our next sunday at the Old School House is Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band featuring Barnsley’s Dom Dudill on Fiddle.

“We are Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band, a travelling troupe of musicological minstrels, peddling our unique good-time tonic to all four corners of the land. Made from a secret combination of early blues and jazz forms, a sprinkle of ragtime, a dash of hot swing, the essence of sweet spiritual, a pinch of the oldest of old-timey melodies and a teaspoon of Vaudevillian and Music Hall showoffery, all whisked together with the most esoteric of folk rhythms. The result is a surpassingly melodious music which is replete with tones of joy and fulfilment. This harmonic medicine is a natural aid to titillation and is a guaranteed restorer of vitality, vim and vigour.

Allow us present to you our good-time rags and reels, show stoppers and sight stealers; music for foot stomping and toe tickling that joins hearts with flesh whilst invigorating the thinking mind. We stand before you as harbingers of gentility, bearers of ingenuity, possessors of conviviality, enhancers and champions of upright and virtuous behaviour and caretakers of chivalric honour. As a morally good band our presentations are entirely exempt from the vulgarities and other objectionable features which have hitherto characterized good-time musical extravaganzas.”

Tickets are £7 and available from Ticket Source plus a small booking fee, or on the door.

Doors 5pm, finished by 8pm.  This is a seated gig with a cabaret- style layout.  Ground floor access, off-road parking and real ale available

Support comes from ItsAcoustica and The Rolling Down Hills
