Newsletter Nov 2016
Great night last Monday from Paul Pearson and Chris McMahon – you’ve not heard the House of the Rising Sun until you’ve heard their version. Check out the Treebeard website – https://www.treebeard.org.uk/ for upcoming gigs (Paul is now in Treebeard too) I’m hoping to make Haze’s Christmas do in Sheffield – just one of Chris’s other bands
The great thing about Singers and Musicians nights are that you never know who’s going to turn up. Vic Shepherd and John Bowden joined us last night with some top class trad. They are drumming up trade for their fundraiser this coming Sunday for a memorial for the Oaks Disaster – see pic at the bottom of this newsletter for details.
Note the guest booking we had booked for 28th Nov has been cancelled. This is due to general low attendence on Monday nights.
The AGM will be on the 5th Dec – Without wanting to sound melodramatic (but being anyway) the future of Barnsley Folk Club is hanging in the balance – attendence has dropped to an unsustainable level (no-one seems to go out midweek anywhere these days, let alone Mondays) and a shake up is required to keep it going. Dave will be resigning as Bookings Secretary and I (Sarah) will be resigning as Publicity Officer which means those posts will be free. There will be a discussion about the future of the club – (new venue?/ night of the week?/ switch to monthly?/ close the club and donate funds to charity?)
Full agenda and start time tbc, this is likely to be 9pm, so there will likely be an opportunity for a quick session before the meeting starts.
The Rolling Down Hills rounded off a busy few weeks for us with an excellent couple of sets on Monday. Thanks to everyone that tuned out. They are local so no doubt will be playing again (or knitting!) somewhere in Barnsley soon – keep an eye out.
The next couple of weeks will be quiet (I recomment that you get in touch first if you are thinking of coming, just to make sure there’ll be someone there!) and our next featured act will be Paul Pearson and Chris Treebeard from Sheffield on 7th Nov. The next guest will be Jed Grimes on 12th Dec.
Sometime in the next few weeks we’ll have a chat about where the club is going – I’ll keep you posted. If you have any feedback you’d like to contribute, please email us on info ‘at’ barnsleyfolk.org.uk
Thanks to Rebecca and Ken aka Hungrytown for an excellent nights entertainment on Monday – If you missed them you can still catch them in the UK see – http://hungrytown.net/concerts/
Next Monday is part of Barnsley’s We Shall Overcome week of events to raise money for Barnsley’s Food Banks and Barnsley Churches Drop-in centre.
All artists are donating their time for free and include – Dave Burland, Richard Kitson and Scott Doonican, The Hurriers, Devils Water and String Theory.
To make the night a bit special, we have asked the acts to do something they wouldn’t normally do, so Richard and Scott are making a very rare appearance as The Last of the Independents – acoustic Rory Gallagher Blues covers, The Hurriers are performing unplugged, String Theory is now a 6-piece with Mick Roberts on Bass, Andy Munro on guitar and occasional 4th Member Zoe Bottomely on backing vocals. Editor of Stirrings Magazine, Raymond Greenoaken is bringing his Duo, Devils Water. Dave Burland argues that he is different anyway, and knowing that he usually throws in a rock and roll cover or two, we can’t argue with that!
We’ve booked the concert room at the trades so there is plenty of room – please come and show your support – we’re suggesting £5 into the collection, but every penny counts. (note there will be no floor spots on this occasion)
Further ahead we have the Rubber Wellies, one of Mike Harding’s favourite bands on 10th Oct and The Rolling Down Hills on 17th.
Well, what with it being the equinox tomorrow it seems like a good time to let you know the what we’ve got coming up – below are all the acts we have booked.
Hungrytown come recommended by club favourites Jeni and Billy – you can here them here http://hungrytown.net/
Monday 3rd oct we have the concert room booked for our part od the We Shall Overcome Weekend – a town wide and national event raising monet for our local foodbanks and the Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project.
We have a really special night lined up for you – local folk legend Dave Burland, a (very) rare appearance of Richard Kitson and Scott Doonican as The Last of The Independents (acoustic Rory Gallagher covers), socialist punk band The Hurriers (Acoustic) http://thehurriers.co.uk/, Devils Water http://devilswater.co.uk/about.htm (Richard Ridley and Raymond Greenoaken) and the largest line up ever of String Theory – the usual suspects plus Mick Roberts on Bass, Andy Munro on Guitar and Zoe Bottomley on backing vocals. We’ve got the concert room booked for this one so you’ll be sure to get a seat.
Well, it was kind of good in a way that the football was on on Monday as it meant we could used the upstairs room for Edwina Hayes, which has a bigger capacity than the lounge, and we needed it! Thanks to Edwina and Dom, and especially the floor singers, Dave Bottomley for MCing and Linda for doing the collection.
Well, that wraps it up for guest nights for now until September. We’re not closing for the summer, but summer nights can be unpredictable, sometimes it’s packed, sometimes no-one turns up at all, so it’s best to phone/ message ahead before making a special trip out;
9pm onwards is Singers and Musicians. Linda will be there most weeks from 9ish, again it is best to phone ahead just in case – email us on firstname.lastname@example.org for Linda’s number.
8-9 is still set aside for the slow trad music session – text me on 07826 791 045 if you are thinking of attending. Note that there is every chance no-one will be there if you don’t.
Hope you have a good summer, and see you in September, we’ll have the AGM sometime in the autumn too – I let you know once the commitee have decided on a date.
