Jeni Hankins 11th July – Postponed to 12th Sept

Due to the (unexpected?) success of the English football team the Jeni Hankins gig due for this Wednesday night has been postponed. Jeni will now play the gig on Wednesday 12th September at the Trades Club Barnsley.

We have taken this decision after receiving a number of messages giving apologies for the gig due to the football sem-final and concern re potentially very poor attendance. Hope you have not been inconvenienced by this decision.

See you in September

Christmas and New Year

Just a quick post to let you know about the Christmas Party – Monday 19th – it’s in the concert room and there will be food. A normal singers night, but bring your carols and seasonal tunes.

Minutes of AGM are taking a bit longer than I hoped – to summarise, Linda is still treasurer. Dave is still doing bookings but cutting back on mc-ing, Colin Wilson will be looking after publicity (with me assisting), Ken Baker has agreed to chair the meetings and Michelle Howell, Tom Heyes, Scott Heald (Doonican) and Jim Potter are committee members.  Monday nights will now start at 8.30 with no Slow Session before-hand. There is still plenty to sort out so we’ll be calling a committee meeting sometime in the new year.

There will be no club on the 26th, singers and musicians nights starting in the new format on Monday 2nd Jan.

June at Barnsley Folk and Acoustic Night

Here is what is going on at the Folk Club in June;

Mon 1st June is a normal club night (and 15th and 22nd)  – if you’ve not been before, we start with a trad music session from 8 to 9ish – everyone welcome to join in – especially beginners – if you’re struggling with a tune at home bring it along and see how you get on.  From 9 pm it’s open floor for Singers and Musicians.  Come to just one of the sessions, or both, its up to you, but if you’re coming to the music session and don’t want to play, please respect the musicians and don’t talk loudly.

Mon 8th we have The Coles from Sheffield as our featured artists – the format of the evening will run as above, but with a 30min + set from the Coles sometime after 9.30ish.

Sat 20th June is Live in Barnsley – we are co-organising the Folk and Acoustic Stage at Igloo (above Chambers).  The sets are 30 mins long and alternate with the sets downstairs in Chambers so there will be constant music all day – there will also be a special festival beer too – a collaboration between Acorn, Two Rose and Geeves Breweries!
Running times are:

12.30 – Avishek Choudury
1:30 – Casey Hall
2.30 – Paul Pearson and Chris Treebeard
3.30 – Zoe Bottomley
4.30 – Toby Burton
5.30- Kirsty White
6.30 – The Rolling Down Hills
7.30 – Richard Kitson
8.30 – String Theory
Videos of all artists can be found on the facebook page of the event-

Alan from the monday night music sessions is also running an unofficial fringe event at the old no 7 – from 2pm “A SESSION OF TUNES AND SONGS Every one welcome to come along and join in the tunes, sing a song or just listen.”

Mon 29th is Winter Wilson (see below for details) and further ahead into July on the 6th a real treat with Dave Burland and his new band (so new they still don’t have a name).

See you soon,

Just a reminder that there is no club tomorrow night due to there being a charity do on in the concert room and a pool match upstairs so the Christmas Party has moved to 22nd.

We were delighted to be nominated for the Barnsley music awards for Outstanding Contibution to Local Music.  The well deserving winner was Jason White of Alternative Barnsley – Jason is a good friend to the club and gives us lots of free publicity in his Alternative Barnsley blog and facebook page – check them out if you haven’t done already.  Although what we do is very different to the rest of the scene in Barnsley Jason includes us as part of it, which is fab and very much appreciated.

Scott Doonican is raising money for Breast Cancer Care by not drinking (!)  please give whatever you can

Hope you have a lovely Christmas
